653. Why I’m Convinced That Jesus Is the Human Messiah (Paul Robson)

Paul Robson was an upstanding Christian leader in a Bible-believing church when his friend upended his world by revealing that he no longer believed the Trinity was biblically true. Although Robson initially reacted negatively to such a departure from the norm, he eventually came to change his mind based on a thorough study of Scripture. What happened next was both tragic and all too common–he was asked the church where he was serving. Having left he is developing websites about doctrine and now has new Bible study app that can help you spot bias in translation.

  • At the end of #653 you responded to a comment from a person looking for a non-biased translation. Your response to compare translations and study the Greek and Hebrew were good, but the most valuable resource I use is the Blue Letter Bible (free app or online). It has many translations available to compare, and an “interlinear” with parts of grammar noted, as well as dictionary and concordance resources. I am surprised it is not more often suggested as a resource.

  • Great interview. It resonated so strongly with me because so many of the points that Paul made are the same conclusions I came to as I took that first turn down the road to search for truth. Not being allowed to honestly question and discuss so-called “sacred doctrines” is a key point I made in my book. It is so unfortunate that so many folks do not recognize the dangerous obstacles they put in front of people who are truly seeking God through Jesus.

Paul’s initial uncomfortable and visceral reaction to counter ideas was what I first experienced when I read a book on the fallacy of Futurist Dispensational Eschatology. The author was mercilessly lambasted by so many that I only got the book because of these negative reviews. It took me several weeks after reading that book, and continued research, to actually accept that so much of what I had learned over the years was simply not scriptural. That was when I decided to write what is essentially my “personal manifesto”, for lack of better terms. I found Restitution after publishing and only then learned how to “label” myself.

Such a good point about “policing” doctrine. I believe this practice is one of Satan’s most effective tools. It keeps his “evil spirit” or negative influence in the Christian community and constantly weakens fellowship. Fellowship is weakened because this “policing” opens the door for pride and “haughty spirits”, which always “goes before destruction.”

Some other random thoughts that I jotted down while listening are:

In order to accept the modern “orthodox” doctrines, there are really so many scriptures that must be overlooked and down right ignored that show Jesus is simply not God. Folks who embrace that teaching, among others, happily wallowing in their cognitive dissonance. They strongly embracing their “spiritual immaturity” until the holy spirit “enlightens” them or “gives them peace” about a convoluted narrative that they can “never fully understand.” As Paul commented, reading the Bible nowadays for me is so much more understandable and the “crimson thread of continuity” makes much more sense.

Another thought was that – by definition, Jesus was a heretic. He taught a doctrine that was not in line with the current day teachings.

On a final note, about being “accepted” as Christian by someone, I had to ask, “Who is Tim Mackie that we should care what he thinks about biblical unitarians?” I actually googled him because I had no idea who he is. My only point is that these days my instinctual response is not to put any value on anyone’s opinion just because they have a large following or are held in high regard by any particular group. I have become more comfortable looking only toward the “author and finisher of my faith.”

Again, brother, I appreciate all your work with these many resources to share the truth. My God bless you richly!!
