Last time we looked at how Greco-Roman people talked about inspired speech. Today we turn to 1 Corinthians and the book of Acts to focus on speaking in tongues. We’ll consider the idea that tongues are angelic languages, how tongues relates to prayer, and how tongues differs from ecstatic speech. Lastly, we’ll dip our toes into the debate over whether tongues ceased with the apostles or not. Whether you personally speak in tongues or not, I think you’ll find the information in this episode helpful.
Scriptures covered: 1 Corinthians 12:7, 10; 13:1, 8-12; 14:2, 4, 6, 11, 13-19, 27-28; Acts 2:1-11; 10:44-46; 11:15-17; 19:6-7

Sean you made a point here at minute 9. You read the early part of 1cor12, v7, stating “to each is given the manifestation of the spirit. ” and you go on, “because it is given IT is a gift.” and right there, you dont define “IT.” But you go on to quote a few of the nine items to tongues. Then you say “So tongues is a gift.!”
Right there you either accidently, or slight of tongue, damaged language definition.
The definition of “IT” is the issue, because when you say “because IT is given, IT is a gift” and the context right there is that the SPIRIT is given, so the “IT” is Gods spirit which is a gift. Agreed.
The anointing all believers receive on point of conversion. And that SPIRIT (that is gifted) is the GIFT. Can you see this?
But following that is where the error occurs as when you go on you imply that the tongues is the “IT” that is the gift! You say “so tongues is a gift.” This is another sub context because the tongues, the interpretation of, the prophecy, the words of knowledge etc are contextually the manifestations that Paul is leading to in v7, the MANIFESTATIONS that come WITH OR FROM the gift. The gift is holy spirit anointing, I wholly agree.
That anointing of spirit within us has manifestation ability through us. Just like YHWH spoke THROUGH the christ, as a unitarian you will agree with me. God MANIFESTED THROUGH the man Jesus. 1Cor8:6. FROM God THROUGH the “anointed one.”
This is what makes us chrsitians. The group in the same anointing spirit! Rom8:11 that “the same spirit that raised Jesus from death, (now) resides in you.” all christians. That spirit “MANIFESTS” through us as it did through Jesus!
1Cor12 is a list of those manifestations of that gift of spiritual anointing we all were gifted as believers.
They are NOT a list of gifts. There is one gift, and nine listed manifestations of that gift.
Surely you dont ignore the teachings on this subject by John Schoenheit etc?
So is this a mental slip where you miss the point in 1cor12? or is it like trinitarians do with Jn8:58 where they refuse to see Jesus is saying “I am he.” and stick rigidly to their theology with blinkers on? Are you bending the issue to suit your bias?
Talking in tongues. 1Cor12, teaching 15.
Sean, how come you dont recognize the work of your fellow unitarians who have been teaching on this for many years. e.g. Spirit and truth fellowship.
You almost say the context a couple of times right around 30 minutes +, into this tongues issue. But you miss it and move off into humour. I dont think its funny at all. You rightly see Paul talking about “giving thanks” (context about tongues) and how if someone gives thanks in a tongue without interpretation no one will be able to say amen. And Paul goes on to say that when he gives thanks he speaks in tongues more than them all, yet you see it as a kind of boast, just because of the Yoda way that the english sounds in that verse, missing the point that Paul is talking about using tongues to thank God. You then go off on rabbits holes missing the “THANKS” aspect to tongues. And you are not addressing the over context of all of Ch12! Mentioned in earlier chapters… WHEN YOU COME TOGETHER!
Do you not notice that Paul in ch12 is talking about how to behave WHEN THEY COME TOGETHER! Because he talks about building up the body. Elsewhere he says speaking in tongues is speaking to God. And prophecy (speaking to fellow people) is better for building the body! Durr, because people understand it! Therefore when someone (in the assembling together) speaks in a tongue (to God in thanks) then they should interpret (give the idea, the gist of what the thanks is) and when they are alone then speak their thanks in tongues, always, building themselves up (in faith and spiritual ability)
Ch12 is about the meeting together behaviour. Ch13 is about doing it in love. Ch14 is more the instruction book about the MANIFESTATIONS. NOT the nine gifts, the nine MANIFESTATIONS of the gift given, holy spirit within.
Do you see the possibility of Paul being always misconstrued in his verse “I thank God I speak in tongues more than you all” ??
Its like the thief being promised he would enter paradise with Jesus that very day he died, and you know the issue of the comma placed wrongly in translation. Well this verse from Paul is the same, this time in english the lack of a comma, right after “thank God,” so you get “(when) I thank God, I speak in tongues more than you all.”
You chasing German chickens didnt come out very German, you sounded to me an American struggling with German, and you had to practice that a few times. I bet you repeated a few words while you learned German, kind of stammering a bit while you analyzed what you were saying.
Of course beginners, uncertain people, will begin to say huba bubba nubber, type sounds, because its the very beginning for them and confidence doesnt come immediately and many dont move beyond this because the doubters give them funny looks in church and the music leader starts the new song loudly to drown them out…!!! So they try but doubt, and the nay sayers make fun of how they sound. Woulda shoulda coulda bought a wheel barra… I heard another well meaning unitarian make fun with that one.
