This is part two of our Biblical Giving Series.
Today Will Barlow continues to lay out a comprehensive biblical theology of giving. First he looks at three areas of continuity between the Old and New Testaments:
- regarding ourselves as stewards of God’s wealth
- giving to the poor
- giving to ministers
Next, Barlow explains three ways in which the New Testament diverges from the Old Testament:
- no more sacrifices
- greater emphasis on freewill giving
- the need for wealthy believers to give liberally

Another good one. It caused me to rethink some things regarding my giving.
Quite enjoyed these two podcasts with Will Barlow. A few days earlier I heard an interesting podcast on “Stuff You Missed in History Class” about Hildegard of Disibodenberg. Supposedly, Hildegard was the 10th child and was dedicated to God/the Church by her parents as a form of tithe. Could you imagine tithing your 10th child today? Wondering if Will had come across this practice of the Middle Ages.
Alane,
Thanks for your kind words! I had not come across any of the tithing practices from the Middle Ages, so your information about Hildegard was fascinating. It sounds like they had a decent handle on the tithe being the “tenth” one, not the first (or best) one. I can’t imagine that happening today.
This also reminds me of Hannah’s vow to God and how she dedicated her firstborn son Samuel to Him. She had faith that God would provide her more children, and He did.
Thanks for commenting!
