571 Give God a Shot (Bob Carden)

This is part two of my conversation with Bob Carden who served as the lead pastor of Grace Christian Fellowship for decades before retiring. (The church is now called Align Ministries, led by Garrett Bova.) Continuing on the topic of healing and deliverance from last week, we begin by talking about evil spirits and pornography addiction. Next we spend a good deal of time discussing how Align Ministries enables holy spirit activity during their weekly services. Carden ends with a challenge, saying, “Put yourself out there for God. Don’t be afraid to attempt something the Bible says you should be able to do.”

  • listening to Bob talk about teaching people talk in tongues and letting the spirit use you, do you believe speaking in tongues is a prayer language available to christian’s, and do you believe it is the sign or only sign of being baptized in the spirit

  • Very sensible, very well-grounded discussion of Align Ministries’ church service. So grateful to hear of him holding course pursuing Christ throughout his life.

Bob was a childhood neighbor of mine in Rye (just 3 houses apart); albeit a few years older, such that we just missed each other when I returned from Vienna as a sophomore in 1972. I also met his [future] wife in 1973 when I was a counselor at a family camp.
Years later – mid 90s – I read his book – the one about the unfinished reformation. This was during the time when those ministers that were scattered by the unraveling of The Way were beginning to distinguish themselves and [re-]organize in various ways. I *did* have good contact with two other Chicago-area [ex-Way] ministers, Chuck LaMatina (from Rochester) and Bruce Mahone (from Westchester/Connecticut). I was somewhat saddened that neither one of them ever mentioned Bob or Align Ministries.

In the meantime, Bob, you’ve got one or two Facebook friend requests from me out there twisting in the wind. It would be great to connect with you. Thank you for the material you shared in this interview.
